The first was entitled 'popstar to operastar' and the second 'soapstar to operastar'.

With that, there were few derivatives left - 'sportstar to operastar' perhaps? It's a shame the same couldn't be said for the participants, though there were several surprises - notably Claire Richards and Darius Danesh the former from the successful pop group 'Steps' and the latter third in Pop Idol. It was a lovely series but, alas, any series founded on the premise of trying to get non-opera singers to sing opera was always going to have quality issues with the performances.

I personally enjoyed the series and would have welcomed a third and final run. Joe, who was dropped by Simon Cowell's record company Syco back in April, also hinted that he might pursue a career in opera. He said: 'My voice has been refreshed. For a singer and for me that is just so exciting. This is not the end of opera for me.

I will definitely sing more opera and who knows, lets see what happens. Then it was time for Joe to perform another rousing rendition of the classic Nessun Dorma for the audience. Nervous: Joe and Cheryl wait to hear the final verdict, but Cheryl later said her money had always been on Joe. Well done! Joe is congratulated by host Myleene Klass after being named the winner.

Before the final started, Joe said: ' It would be amazing to win. I've got to show them that I could be an opera star. And Cheryl added: ' Of course it would be amazing to win, and I'm going to do my best. The final saw the two finalists perform a duet with one of the mentors, their favourite aria and a group performance. Battling it out: Cheryl and Joe were the final two celebrities left on the show, left battling it out for the win. The first performance of the evening came from Joe, teamed with mentor Rolando Villazon for Gastaldon's Musica Proibita.

But before taking to the stage, Joe said he was feeling nervous about the song, explaining: 'I am so used to performing on my own so it's quite difficult thinking about how somebody else is going to sing it and staying in rhythm with him. However, the year-old certainly held his own during the performance. Afterwards, Rolando said: 'I really hope, Joe, that you commit to this art form as I really think you can become an operastar in the years to come.

Simon said: 'Joe eclipsed Rolando completely! What was fantastic was that tonight you had passion and temperament in spades. And Vanessa added: 'You held your own, I think this had to be one of your proudest moments singing with Rolando, you should be very proud.

That was astounding as usual. Glittering in gold: Host Myleene Klass looked stunning in her figure-hugging gold dress as she presented the show. In rehearsals, Cheryl said: 'I've seen Katherine on the telly and at big concerts and thinking that I'm going to be singing with her is amazing.

I'm a very happy girl. But as rehearsals continued, Cheryl began struggling to remember the words, saying: 'I won't see Katherine until show day on Sunday and she won't know that I'm struggling. After a quick rehearsal before the show however, Cheryl seemed to manage with the complex song. Following the performance, Katherine said: 'I am so happy because I knew that she would sing this well and she got it right and she did great. I'm so proud of you, well done. And a clearly relieved Cheryl joked; 'I'm having a hot flush!

Delighted: Joe said he is planning to continue singing opera after he finishes in the competition. Rolando said: 'It was fantastic that Cheryl was able to join voices with the beautiful voice of Katherine's. It's not easy musically but it was fantastic, well done. And Simon added: 'You brought meaning to it. Next up was the solos, as Joe kicked things off with a rousing performance of Nessun Dorma.

Following his performance, which earned him a standing ovation from the audience, Rolando said: 'If anybody had a doubt whether you can sing with passion, that is it. Belles of the ball: Cheryl joined mentor Katherine as they sang the famous Flower Duet. Thrilled: A proud Katherine said she was so happy Cheryl managed to remember the words for the duet.

Katherine: 'For Rolando and I to mentor you, you have been amazing, please keep doing this. Simon added: 'You have grown in vocally, you've grown in confidence and you've actually grown as an artist and as a man if I may say so. She said beforehand: ' My voice was alright but I know it's better now. I feel fulfilled. This has changed my life. Hugs all round: For their final competitive performance, Cheryl and Joe joined Katherine and Rolando on stage. Showing them how it's done: Andrea Bocelli was the guest performer, singing on his own and then with Katherine and Rolando.

Afterwards, Simon said: 'It was pure joy and that is what the aria is all about. It's a wonderful skill to be able to convey joy through music but it was wonderful. Katherine added: 'I thought that was so much more improved than last time you sung it. I actually had tears in my eyes, it was brilliant.
